Detail of the Story
Murad's troubled family resides in a tenement the size of a matchbox in Dharavi. When his violent father brings home a second bride, Murad's mother complains out of despair and helplessness as she tries to adjust to the 'new' lady, who is not much older than Murad.
Murad's friends and temperamental girlfriend Safeena (Alia Bhatt), who doesn't hesitate to acknowledge, "Mere lover se gulu gulu karegi toh dhoptuingi hi na usko," when it comes to keeping other females away from chasing her beloved, are the only bright spots in his life.
Underneath her headscarf, Safeena is a girl who longs to do basic things like "going out with her friends, chatting to males, and wearing a lipstick" without any parental worry, despite the fact that she may come out as having a strong personality.
Murad occasionally writes a few words when he needs to let out his frustration and feelings. Rapper Emcee Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi), who soon recognises his ability, gives him the advice "Tere andar ka lava phat ke bahar aane de." "Agar duniya mein sab comfy hote toh rap kaun karta?" he asks Murad as he gently expresses uncertainty about his rapping in front of others.
With the aid of Sher and a Berkeley music student named Sky (Kalki Koechlin), Murad gradually discovers his inner "cheer phad" rapper as time goes on and adopts the stage name "Gully Boy." To put it another way, "Jeevan jeevan dariya dariya, ek jo paar karo doosra dariya mile," as one of Gully Boy's songs puts it.
Zoya Akhtar has a winner on her hands with Gully Boy. Her skillful steering helps this boat sail smoothly and creates a fun voyage that appeals to all passengers. The director, who is renowned for her affluent, metropolitan tales, has the audacity to investigate the other side this time, and she does not disappoint.
On the other hand, Gully Boy occasionally stretches, but it doesn't significantly detract from the overall quality of the picture. Murad's relationship with Sky also doesn't provide the plot any more depth.
The politics of the movie also illustrate this. Two charged songs from Gully Boy's diverse album, Jingostan and Azadi (a toned-down version of the JNU protest song that no longer makes mention to capitalism, casteism, or Brahmanical superiority), abruptly appear in the movie without any apparent justification. Gully Boy uses just chosen passages from Azadi, surveying and choosing tracks based on its convenience while undervaluing the people and setting that had created the original artistic mileage in the original Mumbai rappers' songs.
